We're not your grandfather's law firm - and that's kind of the point
Look, we started Nonlinear Form because we were tired of watching legal disputes drag on forever when there were better ways to solve things. After years working in traditional firms, we realized the legal world needed folks who actually understood tech, innovation, and - here's the kicker - knew how to resolve conflicts without burning bridges.
Started with three lawyers, a coffee machine that barely worked, and a vision to do law differently. We handled our first mediation case in a tech startup dispute - settled it in three weeks instead of three years.
Expanded to ten team members and opened our Toronto office. Started focusing heavily on data privacy after realizing everyone was kinda freaking out about GDPR and PIPEDA. Turned out we were right to pay attention.
Launched our arbitration program specifically for tech disputes. Also started advising startups on everything from incorporation to IP protection. We'd seen too many founders get burned by bad early-stage legal work.
We're now a team of 20+ professionals handling everything from corporate restructuring to cybersecurity law. Still keeping that startup energy though - we haven't forgotten where we came from.
We've all been there - dealing with lawyers who speak in riddles and send bills that make you wince. That's not us. We explain things in plain English (or French, if that's your preference), and we're upfront about costs. No surprise invoices at 3am when you're trying to sleep.
Our clients tell us they actually understand what's happening with their cases. Imagine that.
Here's something most lawyers won't tell you - going to court usually sucks for everyone involved. It's expensive, time-consuming, and relationships rarely survive intact. That's why we're huge believers in mediation and arbitration.
We've resolved disputes in conference rooms that would've taken years in courtrooms. And yeah, sometimes litigation is necessary - but it shouldn't be your first move.
We're living through a massive shift in how business works. AI, blockchain, data privacy - these aren't buzzwords to us, they're our daily reality. We've spent years understanding these technologies because you can't protect what you don't understand.
When a client asks about smart contracts or algorithmic liability, we don't just nod and Google it later. We've already been there.
Legal advice in a vacuum is pretty useless. We take time to understand your business, your industry, and what keeps you up at night. A contract that's perfect on paper might be completely wrong for your situation.
We've turned down work when we knew the "right" legal move would tank someone's business strategy. That's just honest lawyering.
